Why? - Alopecia Review

WHY?’s Alopecia was an anticipated album for me since January. However, this album is no listening task. As the cover art of the CD suggests, Alopecia is one strange odyssey. It also has been gotten very well reviews from all over the place.

Why? can be described to revolve around Yoni’s Wolf rapping with the band facilitating a strange atmosphere. Either way this type of abstract hip-hop is something I don’t ever divulge myself in. I think I expected to have a hard time listening to this album.

Unlike most hip-hop which is in your face, this one takes a back burner and just has pure lyrical content (sometimes hard to follow). I don’t really look at any of the specific sounds across the album as something special and it’s not what I checked the album for anyway. I’m still having trouble to get under the surface of this album it seems, I’ve thought about delaying a review of this (once again) but I’ll try to endure and give the best I can.

My favorite track on this album is by far “These Few Presidents”. At first I thought this track was going to be a political statement and was in for a song that covers money, death and religion. It gives off some weird vibe and the line “even if I haven’t seen you in years, yours is a funeral i’d fly to from anywhere”. This album is dark and lyrical complex where I probably won’t understand some of these tracks.

I think this album is great but I don’t know if I like listening to it to be honest (not exactly my cup of tea, saying as I love pop music). Being dark and hard to listen to usually aren’t great formulas for a lot of people so this album isn’t for everyone. I can’t fault the music because of that though, you fault the listener :P. There’s no track I hate actually, all of them are solid if not excellent. The track twenty eight was a downer though, being just 44 seconds I wanted more of that track.

   I have to be honest, I don’t understand you giving the album 4.5 out of 5 but then preceding it with a statement like “I think this album is great but I don’t know if I like listening to it to be honest”.

   Well it’s contradictory yes but I still think it’s good just a tough listen. I added () explaining it a bit. Some music I do think is good but just doesn’t suit my style.
