I wasn’t planning on reviewing this album yet but it’s just so amazing that I was forced to. Out of Selkirk, Scotland this trio released The Midnight Organ Fight on April 14 seemingly quietly but I was lucky enough to read some fellow bloggers discuss it on the Elbo.ws forum.
Anyway I’ll get down straight to this album. Frightened Rabbit first starts off with “The Modern Leper” which instrumentally has a pretty simple and repetitive guitaring all the way throughout. Instrumentally the key point is that it creates that sad-melancholy atmosphere and goes well with Scott’s swelling and sad voice. Lyrically though this album takes the cake. A chorus like “you must be a masochist to love a modern leper on its last leg” is something special. The way its sung with Scott Hutchinson’s accent…just beautiful.
The Modern Leper really sets the tone to the rest of the album but the other 13 tracks do not disappoint at all. There are great lyrical moments, things like “Jesus is just a Spanish boy’s name” on Head Rolls Off where Frightened Rabbit emit their emotion and it’s hard not feel as passionate as they are.
I think every song on this album has it’s moment and there isn’t a thing I would change. Every element that I look for in an album, they’ve got down pretty well, lyrically one of the best albums I’ve heard…ever. This album also had that Bon Iver feel for that record For Emma, Forever Ago as the that somber mood remains all the way throughout. That sad feeling is one of a different mood, sad but strong and not defeated. It’s more of that sad sucker that you just can’t get enough of and that you don’t think is lame at all.
Rating: 5 out of 5
