The Nature of Things with David Suzuki is an awesome show and Jon McKiel’s album reeks of awesomeness (haha any old school fans of WWE’s Edge?). Jon McKiel is from Halifax, Nova Scotia home of HeroHill who did a nice write up.
I definitely liked Jon McKiel when I first heard the first track off the album War On You. It’s starts off a catchy little intro with Jon McKiel’s great voice until the instruments start to kick in with Jon McKiel. It’s a tune that lets the riff do its work but it’s still a great song.
The next track is 123 My Friends, which has an even catchier little riff at the intro with a very simple chorus. Some excellent pop rock elements being displayed.
While the first two tracks are great Jon McKiel’s album is more like a alternative folk or alt-country album with the occasional acoustic track. I must say a comparison to Okkervil River is a must for me. It took on a grandiose feeling like The Stage Names with the occasional acoustic track.
My favorite moment on the album is n the middle of Somebody’s Listening where it hits the lyric “I put on my indie rock clothes and go and see a rock and roll band. We look like 100 bucks, just tell where it’s cool to stand”.
A great voice with some great lyrics and topics involved with some excellent music backing Jon McKiel. A very good Canadian album.
Rating: 4.3 out of 5
I was surprised at how good this album turned out to be. Maybe that rating is too low.
