dethklok2 Dethklok: Dethtour 2008 Concert Review

What would you say if I told you that the most brutal band ever known to the metal universe came to the Kool Haus in Toronto on June 20th 2008? Now what would you say if I also told you that this band was also a fictional cartoon created from the mind of the talented Brendon Small who first created the now cult classic cartoon favourite “Home Movies”? But this band is far from the old days of “Home Movies”, who is this band you ask?

It’s Dethklok of course following a lineup of members including, Skwisgaar Skwigelf talller than a tree, Toki Wartooth not a bumblebee, William Murderface Murderface Murderface, Pickles the Drummer Doodly Doodly Ding Dong Doodly Doo, and Nathan Explosion. Going into this concert I had no idea of what to expect since this was of course a cartoon band that I was going to see in all respect. Turns out Dethklok beat out my expectation a good hundred times over. Following a lineup with such stellar openers that nght including well known metal bands Soilent Green and Chaimaira, fans of Dethklok could be seen getting rowdy with excitement everytime the next opener leftthe stage in high hopes that Dethklok might finally appear.

So what happened when Dethklok finally did appear? A projector in the back started to play a scene on the back screen of concert stage with a plot now forming the basis for the rest of concert which concerned the fact that Dethkloks fan basis was getting too large and that this tour must be stopped at all costs by these shady figures that can be seen at the start of basically every episode of Metalocalypse.

Right after this scene finished us Dethklok fans get a real surprise, because who ends up walking on stage with the rest of the live band, well Brendon Small of course. Not only is he the creator of Metalocalypse but he is also the producer, the songwriter, the lead vocalist, lead guitarist, and does basically all of the voices on the show as well. Meanwhile while he is playing up on stage, the projector screen is showing the actual Dethklok performing in all their cartoon glory. Brendon Small has stated several times that although he is the one actually playing live up on stage, he wants his face to stay as far away from the show as possible, because Dethklok is much more than that and he expects people to come for Nathan Explosion and not Brendon Small himself.

Playing such favourites from the Dethalbum as Go Fourth and Die, The Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle, Murmaider, Briefcase Full of Guts, and ending the show with Fansong, Dethklok basically completed the enitre Dethalbum in the short time they were on stage. I don’t think a single Dethklok fan was dissapointed that night, and nor was I, for this night was a night which shall go down in history for the rest of my life. One of the most intense and most amazing concerts I have ever been to I recommend seeing Dethklok live and up close in person to anyone and everyone in the world even if your not a fan of the show Metalocalypse or are a fan of the metal genre for that case either.

The Dethtour continues throughout the summer with tickets being sold anywhere from 25$ canadian and possibly less which is a very small price for the amount of entertainment you will receive upon arrival of their most brutal of metal from their amps to your ears.
